ASUP Strike 2014: Senior Staff Association Of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) To Join ASUP Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) is to join the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education which has paralysed academic activities in polytechnics across the country.

The Chairman of SSANIP, at Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti Dr Ayeni Oluwole, in an interview with newsmen during the Zonal Quarterly meeting of the South West branches of the association, said the need by SSANIP to join the strike had become imperative in view of the failure on the part of the federal government to resolve crisis with ASUP and meet their demands, as earlier pledged by the government.

He said the union deliberately kept quiet and maintained peace since the sister union, ASUP, began its strike, believing that government would see reason in attending to their requests, at least in the interest of innocent students.

While accusing some elements at the federal level of colluding with anti-education forces to scuttle the future of Nigerian students, Oluwole urged President Goodluck Jonathan to act fast by identifying such elements and doing away with them.

He said unless the federal government did something urgent to address the situation and halt the prolonged ASUP strike, SSANIP would be left with no alternative but to join the strike which, he added, was affecting his members.

He said SSANIP shared in the concern of ASUP that government must consider setting up a National Polytechnics Commission, review the pension contribution ratio as well as ensure proper funding of polytechnics so as to make them attractive to students.
